Using the Five Senses to Design âFeel Goodâ Experiences
As you were reading the words above, you probably already started thinking about how to trigger habit-forming neurotransmitters in your wellness business. You will write those down in a moment, but before you do, think about the impact of our five senses:
Smell. Have you ever smelled something distinctive and had a flood of memories come back? I can't walk onto a Navy ship without being transported decades back in time by the smell alone. It's not unpleasant. The unique combination of oil, hydraulic fluid, electrical wiring, people, and salt water is simply unlike anything I have experienced in normal daily life. When you think about our evolution as human beings, the powerful role of smell makes sense. Scents can travel across distances, reaching us before we come into physical contact with someone or something that is good, bad, enticing, dangerous, or repellant. Scents can also linger in an area, giving us clues as to what happened there before we arrived. In high-end retail stores, hotels, casinos, and first-class airline lounges, pleasant scents are deliberately pumped into the space to shift people's mood, cause them to linger longer, spend money, and yearn to come back. The best wellness businesses are doing this as well.
When you think about the scents you want in your space, be mindful of your own scent and that of the people you employ. Give your team members explicit instructions when you hire them. Nothing will ruin a wellness experience faster than an employee who is either wearing too much perfume or cologne or has body odor.
